The Keep Berwyn Beautiful Awards recognize the improvements made to residential, commercial and institutional properties in Berwyn. The awards highlight gardens and ponds; remodeling of homes, commercial and institutional buildings; historic renovations; and patriotic displays. The ABC (All Berwyn Committee), the City of Berwyn and the Life Newspapers have sponsored these awards for over 20 years. Bungalo+ was proud to sponsor this year's award for the "Best Patriotic Display," which was presented to the Violet Flower Shop. The picture was taken at the Award ceremory when Bungalo presented the award prize check.
On February 14th, 2002 Bungalo+ was honored to have the noted LGBT civil rights activist Barbara Gittings present her personal journey in a lecture entitled "Gay and Smiling: Tales from Our First Fifty Years of Activism." From "commie, Pinko, Queer" inquisitions of the fifties thru the Anita Bryant era of the late seventies, to the "family values" issues of today, this pioneer of the Gay/Lesbian Rights movement has been "out" there fighting on behalf of our community. Being open about one's sexuality meant the likelihood of losing one's job, being arrested, and most certainly being labeled mentally ill. Victories like, permitting the use of the U.S. mail to distribute gay magazaines and periodicals, the beginning of the process to repeal state sodomy laws (thus, de-criminalizing homosexuality), and the 1973 decision by the psychiatric profession to take homosexuality off the list of mental illnesses, helped make the visibility issue less threatening. Her work with the American Library Association, however, could arguably be her most important. Her "Hug a Homosexual" booth at an ALA conference in the early seventies brought attention to the lack of gay and lesbian literature on the shelves of our public libraries. Barbara ended her program with these thoughts: Progress on paper (laws), will not cause a change of heart. We must stop the hateful words that come out of peoples' mouths. At some time in our lives, we will all be placed in a position where we can make a difference, be it at work, with our families and friends, or in our community. Our job is to recognize the opportunity and act. We are not invisible anymore.
On June 5, 2002 BUNGALO presented a panel discussion in the Berwyn Public library's second floor Community Room entitled "Journeys Through Time: Stories From Our Personal and Shared Histories."
For one and one half hours seven members of Bungalo shared their personal histories and along the way found both common ground and differences of opinion. It was a lively discussion and well received by those in attendance. This photo was taken after the discussion and shows six of the seven panelists.
On October 26, 2002 Bungalo+ joined with the Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association (OPALGA) to host a get together for members of the organizations at the Berwyn American Legion Hall. There was a live DJ providing music in addition to food and drink. Two contests were held for those in attendance, one for best male or female drag costume and the other for best overall costume. The party was a unqualified success. Pictured below are some of the scary creatures who attended the event.
